What actually happens over Ibiza on 2 August 2027
On Monday 2 August 2027 a total solar eclipse crosses southern Spain and North Africa. The band of totality is narrow, and Ibiza is not in it. Spain’s Instituto Geográfico Nacional places totality over Cádiz, most of Málaga, the southern edges of Granada and AlmerĂa, and Ceuta and Melilla, where it runs close to five minutes. Everywhere else in the country, the Balearics included, sees a partial eclipse of at least 70 per cent.
Worth being clear about the difference, because it changes what you would plan. A deep partial eclipse does not bring darkness. The light thins, the heat drops, shadows sharpen at the edges, and the whole thing is over in a couple of hours. If you want the few minutes when the sun disappears completely, you have to be in AndalucĂa or in Ceuta that morning. If you want the island on a strange, quiet August day, Ibiza is where you already want to be.
Where the light is worth watching from
The island helps here. The west and south-west sit high above the water with nothing in the way — the cliffs around Es Cubells, the ridges above Cala d’Hort with Es Vedrà in front of you, the terraces above Cala Jondal. A house with an open horizon and a terrace you can stay on for two hours is the whole requirement, and most of our seafront and hillside villas answer it without anyone having to go anywhere.
The alternative is a boat. Anchored off the south coast with the island behind you, the change in the light reads on the water before it reads on land. A day charter that morning is straightforward to arrange; the practical limit is twelve passengers, so a larger group goes out in two boats.
Planning a stay around it
2 August 2027 is a Monday, which puts it inside the first full week of August — the most requested week of the Ibiza year. The sensible order is to fix the dates first and choose the house second, rather than the other way round.
Never look at the sun without proper eclipse filters, including during a partial eclipse. Sunglasses are not filters, and at 70 per cent obscuration the sun is still bright enough to do permanent damage.
