The campo
Santa Gertrudis sits in the middle of the island, which means it is twenty-something minutes from almost everywhere and nowhere in particular. The village square is the one everybody means when they talk about a village square in Ibiza: pedestrian, shaded, three or four places worth eating at and a bookshop that has no business being that good.
The land around it is flat and farmed, so the houses here are fincas with walls a metre thick and courtyards that stay cool at four in the afternoon. San Rafael and San Mateo, further out, are quieter still â one with the island's potters, the other with its wine.
Who this side suits
People whose week happens inside the house. A long table under a carob tree, a kitchen big enough for a chef, nobody overlooking the pool, and the beach as an outing rather than a fixture.
It is also the practical middle: if half the group wants the west coast calas and the other half wants dinner in the old town, from here both are a drive of about the same length and nobody wins the argument. What it does not give you is the sea from the terrace â for that, the south or the east.
