San José, or Sant Josep de sa Talaia, is the municipality that takes in most of Ibiza's south-west coast: the calas of Cala Tarida, Cala Vadella and Cala Conta, the hills around Sa Talaia, and the gated hillsides of Vista Alegre. A villa in San José is chosen by the water it looks onto and the hour of the day it is built for, and for most houses on this side of the island that hour is sunset.
Where is San José in Ibiza?
On the south-west of the island, away from the town and the marina. The village of Sant Josep sits inland, at the foot of the hills, and from it the roads run down to the calas: Cala Tarida, Cala Molí and Cala Vadella on the west, Cala Bassa and Cala Conta to the north-west. Can Josie, in the San José area, is about 4.1 km from Ibiza Airport in a straight line, and Ibiza Town is about 9.2 km away, so the countryside is quieter than the distances suggest. Our villa pages group the whole area under San José; Cala Jondal and Porroig, on the south coast, have their own page.
Three ways to stay in San José
The same municipality holds three quite different weeks.
- Close to the calas on the west coast. Villa Diso is a short walk from the sand at Cala Vadella, about 150 metres, with a breakfast chef and sea views from the pool terrace. Villa Katherine, also near Cala Vadella, is spread across three separate buildings, which suits a large family or a group of friends who want long hours around the pool and a door of their own at night. Villa Ivy stands in gated grounds a few minutes from Cala Tarida, with a roof terrace for the sunset.
- In the hills, with the countryside around you. Villa Haisley looks across green ridges to Sa Talaia, the highest point in Ibiza, with direct access to the parkland around it. Can Chloe is set high above Cala Molí and is arranged around the moment the sun drops into the sea.
- Gated, with a view to Formentera. Vista Alegre is a gated community on the south coast with round-the-clock access control. Villa Puma has a pool terrace with an uninterrupted view of Formentera, and Villa Serenity is built around wellbeing, with a hammam and a gym, close to Cala Jondal, Es Xarco and Cala d'Hort.
None of these is better than the others. They suit different groups: one wants the cala within walking distance, another the quiet of the hills, another a house that keeps everything inside its gates.
What is there to do around San José?
Mornings are for the calas. Cala Tarida, Cala Molí and Cala Vadella are all on this stretch of coast, and Cala Bassa and Cala Conta are the usual choice for a longer lunch by the water. In the evening the west coast does what it is known for, and several of the houses above have a roof terrace for exactly that. For a quieter day, a villa such as Villa Marielle, between the village of San José and Cala Jondal, can fill the hours without anyone leaving the gate, with padel and gardens among palms and pines.
For the sea there is the boat. Formentera is about 35 minutes from Ibiza by boat, and our yachts come with a professional skipper and insurance. Fuel is not included: it is used on the day and charged at cost, with no mark-up, and we give you a realistic figure for your route before you commit. The detail is in Villa with a Private Boat in Ibiza.
How to choose a villa in San José
- Cala first. Decide which water you want close: Cala Tarida, Cala Vadella, Cala Bassa or the south coast. The distance on foot is written on each villa page.
- The hour of the day. West-facing houses are built for the sunset; those on the south coast take the morning light and the view to Formentera.
- Setting. Calas nearby, hills and parkland, or a gated community. Each gives a different kind of week.
- A car. Most villas here are easier with a hire car, which we can arrange with the rest of the stay.
- Group size. For a party of around twelve, read Villa in Ibiza for 12 People.
If you are weighing the west coast against the east, Santa Eulalia is a different week, built around its marina and promenade: see Villas in Santa Eulalia. And for the beaches, Best Beaches in Ibiza explains which cala to choose, and when.
